Normandy: what if It’s raining, sunny, or both

Whatever mood the weather is in, you will always find a suitable activity or excursion in Normandy. And even when the weather is ghastly, a change in the tide will often swiftly bring back the sun

By car, motorbike, (electric) bicycle or on foot, explore the country lanes of the Pays d’Auge region amid the stud farms and orchards. Don’t forget to look carefully between the hedges to admire the magnificent manor houses and half-timbered houses.

Visit Cambremer, its cider works and remarkable garden, then the village of Beuvron-en-Auge and see the superb panorama from its chapel of the Forges-de-Fermont. For castles with grounds, see Saint-Germain-de-Livet, Crévecoeur-en-Auge, Vendeuvre, Canon, or Falaise.

Head seaward for Cabourg and a walk along the Marcel Proust Promenade, Houlgate – Villers-sur-Mer and the Vaches Noires (“Black Cow cliffs”), or Deauville and its boardwalk.

Honfleur is renowned for its old port, ‘celebrity’ garden, church of Saint-Catherine, Eugène Boudin museum, Satie House and romantic streets. A little further on, to the west you come to the region of Bessin, with Bayeux (cathedral, Bayeux tapestry), the town of Port-en-Bessin and the Landing Beaches, and to the north you will come to Fécamp and Etretat.

Animal lovers can enjoy a day at the splendid Cerza Zoo near Lisieux

For a sheltered excursion, there are the castles of Crévecoeur-en-Auge and Falaise (with images in augmented reality via tablet; tour followed by a visit of the robot museum), the Peace Memorial Museum in Caen or one of the museums devoted to the 2nd World War (Pegasus Bridge).

If you find yourself in Honfleur, take shelter in Naturospace where the butterflies will land on you!

Take a stroll in Lisieux retracing the steps of Saint Thérèse.

Go sight-seeing and shopping in Caen or Rouen.

Put your feet under the table in a good restaurant. Whether you are looking for local or starred cuisine, there’s something for everyone!
